About this deal

The plot is tight-knit, involving spies, Nazis, murder, secrets -- the works; to me, it was quite the page-turner. But I have to wonder what Coben's personal obsession is with having all the characters in his books marry their first love (aw shucks, how sweet), having these marriages end almost never in divorce but in the untimely death of a partner, having those who cheat duly (and violently) punished for straying, and constantly reminding readers that his couples keep no secrets from each other and, when they do, are likewise punished. Cassandra is the sister of Joe Lewiston, and had another brother named Curtis, who was murdered in an assumed robbery.

Do you understand why Susan Loriman concealed the fact that she had been raped and subsequently killed her attacker? His approach to gay sex is looked upon by his handlers in the Navy as a sign that there is something mentally deficient in him or that he is simply depraved. Their offer to Hank was simple: go back to the brothel, work undercover as a prostitute, and risk your life to entrap Nazi spies. Bram has taken an interesting premise—gay men in the Navy during the great war—and turned it into a tightly written, well-plotted story.

So many characters, so many plot lines, it was hard to keep track of what was going on and who was doing what to whom. It held my interest, but the characters were so off-putting that I couldn't muster up sympathy for any of them. Turns out the girls had received a text from a friend who's car had gotten stuck in the snow so, being good and helpful kids - they went to help. Perhaps my scathing criticism is a product of my tastes, but with nearly every mystery I've ever read, the author seems to simply be going through the motions. When my oldest son was a teen that rule was rather challenging to enforce because he had a nasty habit of borrowing friends' devices.

What did you think of the author’s storytelling style, how he employs different voices in the narrative and uses flashbacks and foreshadowing?Interestingly Hank comes to the realization that he was in love with Juke also but only after Juke is murdered.
