About this deal

Frisby and the Rats of NIMH became the basis for the animated film The Secret of NIMH, the directorial debut of Don Bluth.

I grew up watching Don Bluth's animation movie The Secret of NIMH, and I had no idea this was a book. I think it was my second-grade teacher who read this to us in class, like a chapter a day, or something. There are really two stories going on at once; O'Brien cleverly brings the two together slowly by revealing their connection detail by detail through an absorbing flashback. It's hard to imagine anyone not being moved by "The Rats of Nimh" and its characters are well-developed and not easily forgotten. Normally it's a mixed bag with books that win this award for me, but this time I can say this book deserved the award.

Why do I always prefer small colonies of animals in fiction and wish for them to take over the world? But I think the addition of magic, really changes this from an animals perspective of vast intelligence (similar to Flowers for Algernon) to one of magical understanding, which really doesn’t make sense in context of escaped lab rats. In both cases she is also given a time table and plenty of warning, helping her and the rats to make plans. One was an introduction to linguistics class, which I'll probably mention when I review The Bird Way.

My only critique would be that given the large cast of rodents (and birds) in such a small book, I was given just enough plot cheese to nibble on without ever really feeling full on complete character development.I've read reviews about what the author's intention was, pointing to the various themes - from science playing with nature to self-determination to morality - present in the story. Frisby, a recently widowed mouse, lives with her four children in a cinder block, in a field belonging to a farmer named Mr.

A good story with which to illustrate the importance of kindness, family and friendship as well reading and problem solving skills.

Nicodemus' thoughts about prairie dogs and their potential evolution and the evolution of monkees to men (implied but not explicity stated) is clumsy and well above the heads of most likely readers and seems out of place. I must confess I still pick it up every decade or so and read it again, for the sheer pleasure in such a simple but compelling story. The entire book's tone is one of being invited into a secret that only you, the reader, are accepted into. Frisby "a combination of science fiction and animal fantasy" that described "fantastic situations with scientific accuracy". This is the Newberry Award winning book for 1973, and this was there main reason I wanted to read it.
