About this deal

If you liked Bridget Jones' Diary, and you are either Irish, or from Irish descent, chances are you are going to LOVE this book! I've smiled and giggled my way through, empathised with Aisling so many times and yes, shed a tear or two with her as well.

So Aisling embarks on something of a life-changing experience, still donning her anorak and holding into her good sense. and people are still arriving down to breakfast, heading sheepishly towards the buffet like they have all the time in the world. I completely adored this highly entertaining and comic look at the Irish cultural phenomena that is being an Aisling.

You might think everything is rosy for Aisling: she is in a long term relationship with her boyfriend, John, but even Aisling is starting to wonder when one of the weddings she goes to will be her own. Emer went on to joke: “I remember a few years ago in one of the books there was a dog that was a little bit randy and my mother was worried people would be offended by the randy dog but it is like the dog is the least of your worries. I catch sight of my reflection – mother of God, I didn’t even take off my makeup last night, that’s highly unusual – and wince. This is not a genre I usually read and, despite being Irish and having lived all my life in Ireland, the drinking, social, partying culture has never been part of my personal experience. we’re pulling out of the driveway, the atmosphere between us in the car a little warmer than in the diningroom, but there’s still a strange tension, hanging around like a ferocious smell.

Tore through it in one sitting and confused the living daylights out of my cat (that feckin' cat) by alternating between gales of laughter, sniffles and (at one point) full-blown sobs.

If you're Irish you'll really appreciate the humour, slang, phraseology, and cultural references in this book. The narrative begins and ends with a wedding, but we can see a different Aisling from the first wedding. Mammy will go through him for carrying in half a bale of hay in his brown Work Trousers and bobbly old Work Jumper. This book is written with such a huge amount of warm, Irish wit that it is so easy to immerse yourself in Aisling's life and you quickly feel like you have become one of the family. Each team member will get a Notions tote bag and Complete Aisling t-shirt on the night, as well as complimentary West Coast Cooler (go EASY on them now girls) and some delicious nibbles (feck the Points! Then one disastrous romantic getaway convinces Aisling to leave him behind and head for the bright lights.

Total target market would be late 20s / early 30s Irish women – but that doesn’t mean I didn’t, and others wouldn’t, enjoy it. As her new life comes crashing down, Aisling is forced to move back home to Ballygobbard and her mam. I saw the wonderful Marian Keyes recommend this book on Twitter (it’s already been published in Ireland – where it’s set) and then found it was to be published in the UK in May – and so I could download an advanced review copy from Netgalley – so that I did!No one outside of Ireland would comprehend beyond the first page but that only served to remind me how lucky we are to live in this unique country with people like Aislings! I've long since disentangled myself from the Facebook group, because it's just too much, but the original sharp character observations are here in spades. Books I've read and loved so far in 2021 include Acts of Desperation by Megan Nolan, Corpsing by Sophie White, The Stranding by Kate Sawyer, Did Ye Hear Mammy Died by Seamus O' Reilly, Detransition Baby by Torrey Peters and In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado. Armed with an never ending supply of Parma Violets (which I still hate to this day but my mum swore where a motion sickness remedy) w would then endure the long drive to Fishguard with mum shouting "don't make too much noise, you'll distract your father", "no, we're not nearly there yet" and "if you hit your sister one more time, I'll smack the back of your legs so hard you won't be able to sit down for a week!
